Social Security recently introduced a new online application system for disability benefits that aims to simplify the process. If you plan to apply for these benefits, understanding the steps and potential challenges is essential. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know and your options for applying.
First, you need to know that there are 4 ways to apply:
- Online
- In-person
- Over the phone
- By mail
Applying over the phone is often the best method for SSDI.
Mailing applications can lead to issues like lost paperwork, which may result in an application being considered incomplete. Similarly, applying online can be confusing due to the many questions and parts involved. Some applicants have even reported that their online submissions were not recorded.
Who can access the online application system?
In December 2024, Social Security introduced an enhanced online application system designed to streamline the process. However, it is currently limited to specific individuals, including those who:
- Are 18-64 years and 10 months and applying for SSI and SSDI.
- Have never been married.
- Have never applied for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for themselves or a child.
- Are U.S. citizens or qualifying non-citizens.
